Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Charlie Crist (D- St. Petersburg) released this statement following approval of the Fiscal Year 2023 Legislative Branch appropriations bill by the House Appropriations Committee. The bill provides funding for the Capitol Police, makes investments in the Capitol Complex to keep visitors safe, and provides resources and staffing to keep Congress running and serving the American people. The bill passed the Committee by a vote of 32-26 and now heads to the House floor for consideration in the coming weeks.

As a Member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Crist secured a provision in the bill that directs the Congressional Budget Office to include information in its reports to Congress on how legislation and federal policies impact racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups differently. This advances Crist's efforts to identify bias in federal legislation and reverse the harm of racist and outdated policies.

"Florida's families deserve a government that works for them and reflects their values -- and that is exactly what this year's Legislative Branch appropriations bill does," said Rep. Crist. "This bill fully funds the Capitol Police to better protect our democracy and the public who visit our beautiful Capitol Building, and it gives Congress the resources it needs to best serve the American people. I'm also pleased this bill includes my provision to identify racial and economic bias in legislation -- because Congress should have a full understanding of the effects of the laws we pass and take steps to right historical wrongs."
